Thanks so much to all who participated in our Strategic Planning process either through attendance at our AGM at The Lir on Feb 19, or through written feedback.
Content generated at the session after the AGM, facilitated by Tríona Ní Dhuibhir, alongside your written input, forms the backbone of our Society’s first Strategic Plan. This Plan will be complete and made available over the coming months.
We asked you to vote on the name of the Society before the AGM and we thank you for taking part in the survey. We offered four options. We received great feedback to this prompt, including the suggestion of other names for the Society. We took these additional suggestions on board and included as options to consider at the AGM.
There was discussion around the distinction between “The Irish Society” and “The Society of Irish”. Members felt that “The Irish Society” was inclusive of all designers who are living and working in Ireland, including designers born elsewhere. Members felt that “The Society of Irish” felt representative only of people whose nationality is Irish. The Society embraces the ethos of inclusivity and decided on “The Irish Society”.
Members discussed that “Performance” as an umbrella term was inclusive of designers who worked both in theatre and film. It was agreed that “Performance” could elegantly replace “Stage and Screen”. The substitution of two words (Stage and Screen) for one (Performance), in the title, results in the old and new names being recognisable and related to each other, which is of benefit.
In careful consideration of these factors, an overwhelming majority of attendees at the AGM voted on the new name for the Society – The Irish Society of Performance Designers (ISPD).
Our name is important – as is your voice. We would like to give our full membership the opportunity to vote on the adoption of this new name.

An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) will take place on Thursday 16 June at 9.30am, on Zoom, in order to change the name of the Society in our constitution, pending the outcome of this vote. All members are welcome.
